The College of Business Administration at Kuwait University is an AACSB accredited school, and English is the medium instruction. The English Language Unit (ELU) caters to the needs of all the departments. All students accepted to CBA start with English language courses offered by the English Language Unit.

This course is a general English non-credit course to help improve students’ English skills to the level required to enter the College of Business Administration. If they are tested into this course (their grade is 40-59 %), they are not yet ready for the College of Business Administration. After successfully completing this course, these students will move onto English 106, the first English credit course in the College of Business Administration. Students can only register in 106 if they pass 096 or by retaking the placement exam.
English 096 consists of three components:
- Writing
- Listening and Conversation
- Reading
Each of these three components meets for one hour a day, five days a week, for a total of fifteen hours of classroom instruction per week.
This course is a general English credit course (4 credits) to prepare students for the next level of English which is the Research Writing course (126) at the college of Business Administration. Students must pass the pre-requisite course English 096 with a grade of above 60 % or the placement exam with a grade between 60 – 79 % to enter this course. After successfully completing English 106, students will move onto English 126, the Research Writing course. Students can only register in 126 if they pass 106 (retaking the placement exam is not possible).
English 106 consists of three components:
- Writing
- Listening and Presentation
- Reading
Each of these three components meets for one hour a day, five days a week, for a total of fifteen hours of classroom instruction per week.
This course is an advanced level English language writing course. The objective is to develop comprehensive writing skills pertinent to an argument essay and research paper. Guided instruction and extensive practical exercises assist students in understanding and formulating a five-paragraph argument essay based on a strong thesis statement, and composed of a detailed introduction, body, and conclusion. The essay is then developed into an extensive research paper, utilizing outlining, paraphrasing, summarizing, and referencing according to APA (American Psychology Association) style format. Students are placed into 126 either by passing the placement test (80 + %) or by the successful completion of English 106. E126 meets for one hour a day, five days a week, for a total of five hours of classroom instruction per week.
This is an advanced English presentation course. The objective is to develop the skills to research, prepare, and conduct successful presentations with visuals or slides. Guided instructions and extensive practical exercises will help students in understanding and formulating a variety of different forms of presentations, which will equip them better for their future. All presentations require students to utilize the matrix and conduct given information in a comprehensive and articulate manner, where the audience is kept engaged and informed throughout. Students are placed into 146 by the successful completion of English 126. E146 meets for one hour a day, five days a week, for a total of five hours of classroom instruction per week.
